Our History

Excelco Developments Inc. was incorporated in 1947 by Al Newman and Roy Brooks. They opened our sister company, Newbrook Machine Corporation, in 1951. Newman and Brooks had held major management positions at the Curtis Wright Aircraft Manufacturing Facility in Buffalo during World War II. Newman's background was technical and operations and Brooks's was subcontracting. Curtis closed the Buffalo plant at the end of the war. Newman and Brooks had both been frustrated with the difficulty of getting complicated projects subcontracted from the then existing single operation supplier base. They saw a business opportunity for a flexible supplier willing to work to exacting specifications and provide a wide array of services.

Their original vision was to create a company which would provide a single source of supply for complex projects procured by large companies and government agencies.

The first purchase order came from the Westinghouse Small Motor Division which had been started in the former Curtis Plant. Eighty percent of our current business can be directly traced to this original order which we believe is a testament to 50 years of meeting and exceeding our customers' needs.

Our history has been to focus on two to three small niche markets with the intent of becoming the supplier of choice in these markets. The niches have tended to change as technologies have evolved but the primary customer base has remained quite constant. These niches have included:

Rocket motor cases
Aircraft tooling
Nuclear reactor servicing equipment
Liquid metal fast breeder nuclear reactor components
Pioneer Venus space probes
Helicopter towed mine sweeper foils
NASA Hubble Space Telescope
Small submarine hulls
Titanium vessels and mechanisms for seawater application
Pharmaceutical freeze dryer components
Titanium oil field stress joints

Newman's sons, Russ and Doug, joined the businesses in 1970 and 1975. Newman purchased Brook's interest at his retirement in 1980 and Newman's sons purchased his interest at his retirement in 1985. After 20 years as President of the company, Russ sold his interest to Chris Lanski and went sailing in the West Indies. He has relocated to Miami and now runs a think tank for CEO’s and company presidents who want to learn and grow their businesses ( www.thenewmannetwork.com ).

We remain dedicated to the founders' original vision. We have a national reputation as unique suppliers of complex metal components and assemblies used in high tech applications by the premier prime contractors, government agencies and universities. We also manufacture similar equipment for high end commercial applications.

Our 50,000 square foot facilities are located in Western New York adjacent to Interstate 90 and US Route 20. The Buffalo International Airport is 40 miles east of us via Interstate 90 making us easily accessible to our national customer base.
